Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia surgery, or male breast reduction, can help you overcome the physical and psychological difficulties of gynecomastia (enlarged breasts), giving you a firmer, flatter chest, reducing your self-consciousness about your appearance, and restoring your overall confidence.

Gynecomastia— the overdevelopment of the breasts because of genetics, significant weight loss or gain, glandular problems, or a hormonal imbalance—affects millions of boys and men.

If treating the hormonal imbalance doesn’t work, many men choose to have the excess breast tissue and fat removed through liposuction techniques or incisions. Gynecomastia surgery may be the solution for you if you are experiencing an abnormal appearance not easily covered by clothing, asymmetry in the size of your chest or breasts, depression or distress related to your appearance, difficulty finding well-fitting clothes, self-consciousness about the prominence of your breasts or nipples, and/or unwanted harassment or attention.

What to Expect

To begin your gynecomastia surgery, your plastic surgeon first makes small incisions around the nipples and on the chest in preparation for liposuction.

During the liposuction, the surgeon uses a small metal tube called a cannula to suck out the fatty tissue and portions of the glandular tissue.

Sometimes it’s necessary to extract the glandular tissue through the incisions around the nipples. The surgeon then contours the area and closes the incisions.

Performed under general anesthesia, the procedure usually lasts one to three hours. Most patients are able to return home the same day of their gynecomastia surgery, although an overnight stay may be necessary if other procedures are performed at the same time. You’ll need to avoid strenuous activity for at least five days and exercise for six weeks, but you should be able to resume normal activities such as work in about three weeks.

People have reported the following benefits:

  • Improved appearance with the reduction of breast tissue
  • Symmetry of the chest and breasts
  • Relief from the psychological distress of gynecomastia
  • Greater ease finding appropriately fitting clothes
  • Enhanced body confidence
  • Increased comfort when wearing fitted shirts and when standing up straight
